«Conquistador» – Nicolas Savary
Switzerland, Paraguay — Events
«Conquistador» is a photography exhibition by the artist Nicolas Savary, built on the archive of the life of Louis de Boccard (1866-1956), a Swiss photographer exiled in Argentina in the 1880s and deceased in Paraguay in 1956. COINCIDENCIA supported the exhibition at the «Fundación Texo para el arte contemporáneo», in Asuncion, Paraguay, from 12 June to 23 August 2019.
The research started in 2014, during an art residency in Buenos Aires. When looking at the historical documents, Savary discovered that certain themes could be related to contemporary issues, for instance the tourism industry, ecology and urban development, and the situation of indigenous populations. «Conquistador» has been exhibited at the Musée de l’Elysée, in Lausanne, in 2018, and at the Musée Gruérien, in Bulle, in 2019.
Nicolas Savary is a photographer and visual artist. Since he graduated in Visual Arts from ECAL, in Switzerland, he has researched documentary photography with a particular interest in social, political or historical issues.
