« El Cuarto Mundo », or The Fourth World, is the theme and title that engaged more than 50 artists, in exhibitions that spread across 20 art and culture spaces, in Santiago, Chile, between August 2019 and January 2020, as a proposal of the 14th Biennial of Artes Mediales.
Created in 1993 by the Corporación Chilena de Vídeo (Chilean Video Corporation), the biennial has consolidated itself as an intersectional space that provides an intense dialogue between art, science, and technology. Being, therefore, a showcase for national and international production in the field of visual arts and new media; encouraging the gathering of artists in the area and taking care to address their theoretical challenges.
In this edition, the words, ideas, nature, city, art, and sciences come together in a collective action to develop strategies for adaptation and transformation. Faced with present times, based on the integration of digital technologies in a large part of social processes, creating a relationship between humans and ecosystems that propelled the proposal from which we could observe, think, and imagine The Fourth World.
Two programs entitled Escuela de la Intuición (School of Intuition) and Campos Magnéticos (Magnetic Fields) gathered to provide the public with a calendar of mediations and knowledge management, that aimed to deepen methods and inspirations to awaken collective intuition, in addition to meetings, performances, assemblies, and concerts performed by artists.
Supported by COINCIDENCIA, Julian Charrière, Pauline Julier, Roman Signer, Silvie Defraoui and Ursula Biemann integrated « The limits of the Earth », an axis curated by Jean Paul-Felley, dedicated to the audiovisual production of Swiss artists.
The project was supported by the Ministerio de las Culturas, las Artes y el Patrimonio (Mincap) of the Government of Chile, the Programa Otras Instituciones Colaboradoras, the Fondo de Fomento al Arte en la Educación, the Fondo de Fomento Audiovisual, and the Ley de Donaciones Culturales; being also sponsored by Emian Foundation, Credit Suize, Merrill Lynch, South Pacific Logists, and PCI Comunicaciones Corporativas.
