Ursula Biemann, Javier Correa and Victoria Jolly Mujica at the Atacama desert

Chile, Switzerland — Research Trips (c) Ursula Biemann

Location

Atacama desert
From 18 February until 1 March 2018

Ursula Biemann is an artist, writer and video-essayist based in Zurich (Switzerland). She researches climate change, carrying out her work in remote places. Javier Correa is a filmmaker & documentalist. He was born in Valdivia (Chile). He collaborates with «Ciudad Abierta» (Chile) since 2012. Victoria Jolly Mujica is an architect, co-founder of and resident at «Ciudad Abierta». She was President of the Almereida Cultural Corporation in 2014-2016.

The three artists traveled 1000 Km over a week, from Calama to the rest of the Atacama territory, looking at how the desert is being exploited by big mining companies and astronomical research activities. They also met social actors from indigenous communities who are fighting for their rights to water and the Private Ownership of Water Act in the driest place on the planet. The journey ended in «Ciudad Abierta», where the guidelines for the film they are working on were agreed. They will come back in a year’s time for the final stage of the Atacama project.
